    Paracosm: Snippings from a Novel – 5/17/26

    Side One:

I Found the End – Broadcast

The Garden of Jane Delawney – Trees :
…midday there — behind the fly-ash brick stacked up in the backyard, cordoning the zucchini off from a fatter breed of vole — would squat Jane in a blissful, dawdling delusion…

Vide Cor Meum – Danielle de Niese & Bruno Lazzaretti; Patrick Cassidy :
…and a frayed copy of Astercote on the nightstand. ‘This is the cannon…this is…their castle…,’ she decided inside of her head, marking out plot points in split seconds. ‘…and the cannon is full of blood!’ The vial of her mother’s fuchsia-adjacent nail varnish nearly spilled into the sheets.

    Geppetto – Optiganally Yours :
Monstro!…the prospect of the whale’s stomach, a cavern beyond the unlit closet of jumpers and peg puzzles, called upon Jane’s more amphibian instincts…

Drowning Butterflies – The Cleaners from Venus :
‘It’s something little Jane here will simply need to overcome; most of us have to –’ The welfare officer stopped herself mid-sentence and smiled at the analogy that suddenly came to mind. ‘Butterflies — do you ever feel something like butterflies in your tummy, Jane? Well, next time you drink a glass of water and you feel them fluttering about, just try and imagine them…washing away!’

Drip, Drip, Drip (coda clip) – Chumbawumba

Sparrowpit – Bridget St. John :
…in mimed lockstep behind her new friend; Jane found it whimsical to the point of hilarity. ‘Is this what it’s like to take someone under your wing?,’ Samuel thought to himself, looking back at her freckled face, one far too young for her fourteen years.

Léha Dodi – Les Chevatim; Solomon Alkabetz :
Fridays at sundown were synagogue for Samuel. Jane would accompany, but always kept to herself outside, beneath a window sill, tracing the mortar joints with her fingertips to completion.

Symphony No. 5, 3rd mov. (piano, excerpt) – Henri Sigfridsson; Sibelius :
‘Isn’t s’if I’m t’ be there all days, the whole rest of your life, Jane! You take first little steps and stumble s’long as you don’t break all your bloody bones — all the same’s when you learn to –’ Samuel was about to analogize with bi-cycling, but recalled her inexperience and ineptitude on the subject.

Liebestod (instrumental, from Tristan und Isolde) – Arturo Toscanini & NBC Symphony Orcehstra; Wagner :
…the RCA Victor 78’s distending the insides of the chiffonier drawer took her places a coach or a cruise ship couldn’t…For Jane, it was quite enough to yen.

    Ominous Cloud – Broadcast :
‘…because I don’t know how the MSC thinks it can just push jobs on anybody…not least her…’ The caustic remark didn’t reach Jane’s ears, but even if it had, she wouldn’t have paid it any attention. She made a twist in her barista’s apron where there was a stain, wondering if any liquid would be drawn out, and sighed.

The Only Living Boy in New York (excerpt) – Simon & Garfunkel :
…both feet were tapping up and down like pistons in a dragster. ‘Would you like a –’ Samuel intercepted the question from the stewardess; the music spouting through Jane’s Sony Walkman would’ve prevented her from hearing it anyway.

    Side Two:

    Tasogare – Mai Yamane :
Alien symbols flashed and flickered so rapidly that they seemed to blink Jane’s eyes for her…And silver bearings cascading like raindrops! And people! — so many more than back home, but stalks of them so foreign to Jane, what with their uniformly unmussed black heads of hair and emanations of unmeaning dropping out of their mouths, that the effect didn’t rouse her anxieties nearly as she was used to.

The Words Get Stuck in My Throat (excerpt) – Kipp Hamilton :
She trialed again, the back of her tongue feeling like the rubber stopper in her bathroom sink. ‘WWWWWANT TO–’ Samuel knew to wait it out with patience, bringing his ear forward to discern what she was saying above the raucous of the crowd around them. ‘ T-TO SSSSSTAY!’ He lowered his brow…

The Fixed Stars, the Frontier to Beyond (glass harmonica) – William Zeitler :
‘They won’t let you do that!’ The strength of Samuel’s voice could not keep up with either Jane’s distance as she ran in the other direction, nor with the din of the crowd. Her eyes were fixed to the west, to the dark horizon and to its stars beyond…

    Plans – Kate NV :
‘If Japan won’t have you, Miss Delawney, then the Motherland will…You see this pink tenner? The man on the obverse is Lenin. Get used to seeing him…What are your plans here?’ Jane struggled to unpart her curling lips. ‘That doesn’t matter — I will give you some.’

Call Me – Gigi Masin :
Samuel tried the number of the other ryokan they’d checked out from on Saturday. Still no answer.

The Beyondness of Things – John Barry & English Chamber Orchestra :
Nakhodka was a far, grey cry from Tokyo, but now that she’d crossed the entirety of the Sea of Japan with her — should she really be calling them friends?…more like colleagues fulfilling a means to an end — there was little doubt that she was in no position to make an about face.

Music excerpt from Death Powder (1986) – Shigeru Izumiya

Living Hell – Pain Teens :
‘ДЕРЖИТЕ ЕЁ В ПОДВАЛЕ!’, the voice shouted from above…and certainly no one to talk to about it — not that she was capable of that in the first place…’OWWA!’ Now a splinter. The sole of her shoe had come unjoined from how long she’d been using it to try and pry open the boards nailed across the window well.

By the Sea (excerpt) – Wendy & Bonnie :
Samuel squinted out at the gloom over the sea, unsure about how far the continental coastline actually was from where he stood. He twiddled the Japan Airlines stub from the inside of his pocket and resigned himself from wetting his eyes again.

    Ravine – Genesis

Au Pays du Cocaine – Geese :
Words of hope or comfort inspired nothing in him following his return…Samuel took to writing down what he wanted so badly to tell her, rolled up the private missive in a long green bottle and launched it overhand into the ocean like a stick-grenade.

Symphony No. 5, 3rd mov. (excerpt) – Herbert von Karajan & Berlin Philharmonic; Sibelius :
Three, perhaps four minutes was all she estimated to have at her disposal…a record player, a lone speaker tower, a dust-choked outlet, and four minutes to blast Sibelius’s 5th out from the busted window well while she risked her scrawny arm, waving down anyone who might be searching for the source of the music…ПОМОГИТЕ! ПОМОГИТЕ! ((HA!)) The shouts for help, in unblemished Russian, flew out of her mouth like birds unfettered — she didn’t know she had it in her!
